WASHINGTON With the Sarah Palin phenomenon losing its steam and Wall
Street its swagger, the presidential campaign is resuming its contours
before the conventions as Republican John McCain and Democrat Barack Obama
prepare for their first major debate.

"There was a burst of excitement after the Republican convention, some
combination of Palin plus a new dynamic that put McCain back in the race
and even arguably ahead," said John Fortier, a political expert at the
conservative-leaning American Enterprise Institute. "That all changed very
quickly on Monday."

Wall Street suffered massive losses last week, and credit markets froze
following the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers Holdings and the massive
government bailout of insurer American International Group.

White House officials and congressional leaders warned of a complete
collapse of the U.S. financial system a looming crisis that effectively
focused the presidential campaign on economic issues.

At the beginning of the week McCain said the "fundamentals are strong,"
and Obama pounded him for uttering the phrase as the market cratered.

McCain urged President Bush to dismiss the head of the Securities and
Exchange Commission for lax regulation, and he called for a government
body to take on the toxic debts of Wall Street and for the Federal Reserve
to stop bailing out failed institutions. Obama called for tighter
regulation of Wall Street and help for individuals, including restructured
mortgages and a new round of stimuli.

Momentum lost

In fast succession, the catastrophic news from Wall Street and drooping
public approval numbers for McCain's running mate Palin eroded the
post-convention momentum the Republican ticket enjoyed and restored Obama
to a slight national lead in the polls.

McCain and Obama on Friday will meet in their first of three debates,
opening at the University of Mississippi in Oxford.

The Presidential Debate Commission has declared their first meeting will
focus on foreign policy, but the urgency of the latest economic news is
likely to shift the focus toward pocketbook concerns.
