This person experiences over-thinking when in competition and plays well below their level. To counter his excessive thinking about what he knows to do, I had him engage in a re-direction of attention technique of counting backwards from 100 in 7s (then from a random starting number). This seemed to work a treat. His coach saying he hadn't seen him play better! And this strategy continues to work. I recall seeing this technique described somewhere - does someone have: 1. a research reference describing the mechanism by which this works 2. similar techniques that can assist [...]61_6aebca1bacf5a7fb982524ae2de6fd059879aa23@webmail.iinet.net.au0_0_ 61 181 114_Re: Request for research ref for counting backwards as a strategy to overcome over-thinking in pressure situations10_Tim Herzog21_tim@REACHINGAHEAD.COM30_Mon, 8 Aug 2016 22:48:05 -0400657_UTF-8 Hi Patrea,

Can't think of any research to support the intervention directly, but I
have a comment... I think the motor skill needs to be well enough learned
in order for it to work.

I often refer to stages of learning:
1) Cognitive; 2) Associative; and 3) Autonomous

If one is in the associative stage, or has lingering anxiety that has them
performing as if they're in the associative stage, I imagine that engaging
in analytical thought...taking them away from the present moment, would be
counter-productive. Though, if anxiety is disrupted by whatever neutral
stimulus, with attention then placed on [...]66_CA+YPzq=+86r-TXNsOzapAp4Su4_YiWDeoXXS098sb-uVxo4=5g@mail.gmail.com0_0_ 243 402 20_Re: personality test13_Sophia Jowett20_S.Jowett@LBORO.AC.UK30_Tue, 9 Aug 2016 07:05:16 +0000586_utf-8 Dear Aimee,

Curious what others think. One more thought...
Serial 7's are often used as a stressor in psychohys assessments. I'd pick
a simpler task like easy addition for an intervention like that. Perhaps
your tennis player is also very bright!

I'm writing a review on mental toughness that focuses primarily on the
latest research and thinking in this space (i.e., since 2014). As such, I
would like to locate work that has been accepted for publication by August
31st 2016 or is in press with a peer-review journal. Note, I have accessed
all published research using a systematic search of several databases so do
not require papers that have been published. [...]41_004401d1f472$31b6fce0$9524f6a0$@gmail.com0_0_ 9058 94 40_Cam McEvoy 'stagefright' at Rio Olympics12_Dr. Rob Bell19_drrobbell@GMAIL.COM31_Fri, 12 Aug 2016 10:11:04 -0400244_UTF-8 Cam McEvoy ready to confront 'stagefright' at Rio Olympics....

I believe his facial expressions are/were geared towards Le Clos who was
warming up right in front of Phelps. Le Clos was shadow boxing and jogging
in place right in front of Phelps and in his line of sight.

The media said the competition between the two stemed from London when Le
Clos beat Phelps. Additionally, Le Clos stared Phelps down pretty much the
entire race - even in the pool. So there seems to be somewhat of a rivalry
between the two. [...]66_CAKHqAe4Qgs6axjUdOzQgX63mkwEh0WEO9YMTjKJS7baL95VJqw@mail.gmail.com0_0_ 12321 797 26_Book List, Current Version19_Sherry Schweighardt17_sherry@TEMPLE.EDU31_Fri, 12 Aug 2016 16:46:19 -0400351_UTF-8 Hi, All.

so I'm attaching my current list of sport psych related books, which
will be converted to Excel at some point.

As always, please respond to this post or via private message if you

Thank you for all your work compiling this list.

I know that sometimes I sound judgmental myself, yet I have to take exception with one book, Into Thin Air. Jon Krakauer inaccurately represented at least three of the significant climbers that play an integral part in the book. He, actually, was one of the least senior high peak climbers who got very lucky on that horrible weather day. Climbers Sandy Pittman, Beck Weathers, and Yasuka Namba were all very experienced climbers at the highest peaks in the world. Jon only climbed Mt. Everest. resources. I hope I'm not stepping on any toes, but I went ahead and
converted the Word document into an Excel spreadsheet. I thought it might
be helpful to be able to sort by title, author, topic, or sport. I tried to

adding the books recommended in another recent thread regarding books for
golfers. Thanks for your commentary. I have read both Krakauer's and Boukreev's
books and followed the reporting controversy at the time. They do have
different accounts; the former is on this list because some of my
students selected it for a course reading--which was the origin of
this list. I will add The Climb to the list as well, and those using
the list can select either/both according to their objectives. [...]66_CAPHr9ZLhiHR2nZD3J+SYvaFGNzKEvO+c+j44x7dAzZjMF2ga8w@mail.gmail.com0_0_ 16150 87 30_Re: Book List, Current Version19_Sherry Schweighardt17_sherry@TEMPLE.EDU31_Sun, 14 Aug 2016 22:52:06 -0400363_UTF-8 Hi, Chelsea,

I was wondering if you could share what strategies you use with clients to
prepare for handling distractions? I'm interested in strategies that they
can rehearse ahead of time (eg attention training) and those to use in the
moment (eg when on the starting blocks of their event).

Also, do you recommend different strategies for whether the distractions are
generated from within (eg self-doubt, negative self-talk, over-thinking) or
generated externally (eg the noise of a home crowd when you are the
visitor)? [...]46_000401d1f6a4$30c26250$924726f0$@ozemail.com.au0_0_
