Just to be clear, I was not taking any side on this debate in my original post. I simply wanted to raise the issue so to speak because it is a timely one. My questions were aimed to get a quick and strong response. I was absolutely not repeating a (past) suggestion and I would like to think that my post was clear enough to not give that impression however I see that I may have been wrong. My apologies for not being more succinct. I wanted to discuss the issue as it exists in real time. That could be true, and exceptions prove the rule. My point is that solid work results trump any initials or "certificates" or whatever granted by an organization or "certifying" body of individuals.

I hesitate to weigh-in on this, because it always seems to touch off a

disagree with your characterization of the value of certification.

You mentioned that you have "never had a client ask me if I earned "high

That wasn't your only point - that solid work trumps certificates, etc. You also made the point that certification was of little value. Does anybody have, or can recommend, a psychometrically sound eating
disorder instrument to be used in sport-related research?

Many thanks in advance

to assess specific situations when eating behaviors were done for the
purpose of looking good or performing well in a sport context? That my
friend, I'm fairly certain has not been done (but it's a scale that is
needed for sure, so you may want to develop your own). But first, you may
want to search the database for Greenleaf's work on self-presentation
concerns and disordered eating in athletes and exercisers (I believe she has
at least 2 separate studies on the topic). I am positive [...]40_27Jul200814:43:33-0400spm6j@VIRGINIA.EDU0_0_ 22788 107 30_Re: Eating disorder instrument10_Eva Monsma19_EAVADOCZ@GWM.SC.EDU31_Sun, 27 Jul 2008 16:51:51 -0400380_US-ASCII Sean,

Actually, there seems to be a new line of research following this issue of looking good for sport context demands. Please see:

Monsma & Malina in an issue of Psychology of Sport, 2004 and

Monsma,Pfeiffer & Malina Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport, 2006. I'm not at home but otherwise I would give more complete references. Christine Selby and I are proposing the formation of an eating disorders SIG for AASP. We need 10 members to complete our proposal. We currently have 6 who've indicated an interest.

Anyone on the list who would like to be added, please write me back channel and I'll add you to the list. I have no idea if this can be approved prior to the conference, but if so, it would be great to meet and refine our mission and objectives!
