Before computerized databases became common and available through telecommuications networks to remote end users, print indexes ruled information indexing for what one could find about a topic from journals and magazines. Keeping the size of print publications is always an issue as the more pages to a source, the more the cost of publication. Hence it was standard practice in most periodical indexes to use abbreviations for periodicals and for other repetitive information in the index. Computer storage space is very cheap by comparison, hence with time the trend has been in databases for the use of full journal titles, but this practice is by far not universal. PubMed and Medline, for example, do not provide the full title of journals, but rather use abbreviations for journals in the citations in the Medline database. I posted some of these journal abbreviation sources in a post about Fibromyalgia, here is this list where it will not be buried at the bottom of that post and there are many additional sources for these abbreviations that have been added here. So the result is an expanded rather than an abbreviated list that readers of this list may want to view periodically. There is no defense against individuals or sources that dream up their own abbreviations, rather than using recognized ones. The best periodical abbreviation lists to use are the ones that find the journal abbreviation or the journal abbreviations that one is looking for and this could be a different source each time. In other words, one can not know about too many of these lists. Searching abbreviations in search engines can be very problematic as it will tend to pull up links to bibliographies in which those abbreviations are used. Well it is time to abbreviate this message. Best of luck to all in finding the full titles for these persistent journal abbreviations.
